All there is to know about Ghana
By Danny Know of African Royal Beach Hotel
Key figures - Area: 239,000 square kilometers; - Resident Number: 20,757,032 (2004); - Population density: 87 inhabitants per square kilometer; - Political system: Republic; - Capital: Accra; - Languages: English, Akan, Moshi-Dagomba, Ewe and Ga; - Currency: Cedi; - Average annual income: $ 2200 (2002). Three zones Ghana has three zones: the coast, forests and grasslands. The climate is tropical and as a result, it is almost the whole year muggy, with temperatures to about fourty degrees. But it is especially the high humidity that requires western people to adjust. In the middle of Ghana, in the assembly of the White and Black Volta begins the enormous Lake Volta. This is one of the largest lakes created by human hands in the world. The 'Lake Volta' arose after the creation of the Akosombo Dam in 1966. The dam is located approximately 85 kilometers from the coast in the eponymous town of Akosombo. Almost six hundred villages and towns had to be moved to the growing space. Eighty thousand people were encouraged to find another residence. Accra The country's capital, Accra, is also by far the largest city in Ghana. The city lies as all the major cities along the Gulf of Guinea, part of the Atlantic Ocean. The coastline of the Gulf of Guinea is among the countries Ivory Coast and Nigeria quite densely populated. Accra has slightly more than 1.3 million inhabitants, the cities of Sekondi-Takoradi, Kumasi and Tamale have several hundred thousands. Accra is the economic, political and cultural center of the country and possesses one of the largest artificial ports in Africa. Traveling in Ghana After booking your hotel in Accra Ghana, you can rent a car in Ghana, but smarter and cheaper is it to have a taxi driver to drive you around. There are buses between the major cities of the government to reach other areas packed with private vans (troto's). The main roads are reasonable, other roads moderate. Visa formalities Western citizens need a visa to stay in Ghana. A visa can be applied to the Embassy of Ghana in your country. The processing of a visa takes at least four working days and must be paid in cash. You must have a passport that is valid at least six months from the day that you are applying for visa. A single entry tourist visa can take up to 60 days in Ghana to continue. For the visa you need four recent passport photos, proof of a return ticket, proof of vaccination against yellow fever and two references in Ghana (people that you know or a hotel in Accra Ghana, for example). In 2004 a single entry tourist visa costed US$75. For more details contact your local embassy. Accra Hotels Although you are free to book and choose for your own choice, we would enjoy it extremely if you will book our hotel, The African Royal Beach Hotel.
