Ghana and its nice sites

By Danny Know of African Royal Beach Hotel

National parks and white beaches

Go to the Mole National Park in Ghana during a walking safari in search of elephants and antelopes. In between you have time to enjoy the beautiful view of a lake where the animals go for drinking in the dry season. On the road to Kumasi you see the landscape and people change. You leave the dry Sahel with its Muslim population behind you and travel to a fertile environment with cocoa plantations. Here you will find no more mosques but swinging church societies.

From Cape Coast you will visit the Kakum National Park, the last piece of rainforest of Ghana. You can literally look down on the rainforest from the Canopy Walkway, a rope bridge at thirty meter height, connected to huge trees. In the harbors of Cape Coast and Elmina, two lively seaside resorts on the Gulf of Guinea, there are colorful boats to catch fish that directly on the beach is traded. The coast is also home to the slave forts from which the former slaves to the other side of the world were transported. Accra, the bustling capital of Ghana. You can continue late into the night dancing on the bright West African high life music.

Culture

The Ghanaians are very conservative people in many ways. They attach very strongly to their ancient African customs and beliefs. The outsider will be able to see this nowhere stronger than at any of the numerous festivals which, play practically the whole year, somewhere in the country. It's always worthwhile to visit a festival as the possibility arises, even though it is difficult for a voyage to correct them, since the dates of most festivals may change significantly from year to year.

The Ashanti, who live in the center of the country around their capital, Kumasi, have kept most of their daily habits. Long time they were leading the nation in the region and they are still a proud and confident nation. In and around Kumasi there are many reminders of their glory years in the 18th and early 19th century. The English have had some serious late 19th century wars to increase the Ashanti Empire final authority under the British market. Even in modern Ghana, the Ashanti population is the group that's the most dominant presence.

Everywhere in Ghana you can find handiwork, whether it is weaving, plaiting, pottery or wood working. Who has an eye for beautiful objects will be able to bring nice things home. Special attention should we have for Kent and the Adinkra substances. Kent consists of very long and narrow flaps artfully woven fabric together into a larger whole. The resulting weather patterns often have a symbolic meaning. Adinkra substance that is identified with symbolic motifs. Both types of substance are to be used on special occasions to dress. In and around Kumasi there are many weavers.

Everywhere in Ghana, there are dance groups to find. The traditional local dances are held to honor Ghanaians but also succeed in developing new dances. We know surprisingly much dancing to express, from serious to very airy subjects. All this is of course under the guidance of percussion music.

In Ghana, people dote on all kinds of music anyway. The most original is the modern Ghanaian dance music, the so called "high life". There is also a lot gospel, not a miracle in such a religious country like Ghana. They also love reggae. Bob Marley's legacy is still propagated by countless cover bands.

Location and Climate

The Republic of Ghana is located on the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa, a few degrees north of the equator and the middle of the 0-meridian. The coastline in the south is about 536 kilometers. From south to north you will drive up to 670 miles. With its total area of 239 460 km2 Ghana is not a very large country, comparable in size with e.g. the United Kingdom.

In the south and center Ghana has luxuriant vegetation. There are significant pieces of tropical rainforest and many agricultural areas. To the north the landscape it's far more open and savanna-like. It is a relatively flat land, but in the east there are a few mountain peaks that rise up to 800 or 900 meter. The landscape in the east is dominated by the enormous Lake Volta, the largest lake in the world. The population in the coming years will jump to 20 000 000 allowed.

The climate is tropical, year round, it is warm. The influence of the sea is clearly visible in the south, with around 30 degrees it usually still is a little less warmer than in the drier north. The months of May and September are the rainy season.

In Ghana applies the English Greenwich Mean Time. In the winter the time difference is 1 hour and in the summer 2 hours.
